Claddagh Ring
When most people talk of the claddagh, they refer to the claddagh ring.
There is a historical relation between the Irish fishing village named
claddagh and the claddagh ring. Tracing the history of the claddagh ring
takes us back to around 375 years, it was the time of kings and queens
and human slavery was rampant. An Irish fisherman named Robert Joyce
was captured by pirates and sold as slave to a wealthy goldsmith.
Young Robert kept thinking of his beloved who lived in the claddagh
village. The hardship and pain of being a slave could not make him
forget his beloved. Gradually learning the trade from his master,
Robert thought of making something unique for his beloved. Indeed
it was the dream of being a free man and being united with his beloved,
that gave him the strength to carry on. He started making a ring for her,
the ring was an expression of his feelings for her. After a few years
Robert Joyce was released from slavery, his dreams had almost come true.
His true dream was to meet his beloved and gift her the ring that
he had made for her. Robert went back to the pretty claddagh village
and was overjoyed to see his beloved, still waiting for him. He gifted
the ring to her, the couple were married. The ring was called the
claddagh ring, a ring with a humble beginning that, went on to become
one of history's most meaningful jewels. The claddagh ring captures
the true feelings of a lonely heart that craves to be united. The
meaning of the claddagh ring is described by the features of the ring.
The heart shows love, love between any two people not necessarily
between husband and wife. The hands are extended in friendship and
togetherness, could be between friends, a husband and wife or even
between a mother and child. The crown on the heart denotes loyalty,
in todays world it could mean loyalty between two people.
